Dense Blazing Star is a stunning native perennial with tall, upright spikes of violet-purple flowers that bloom from mid-summer into early fall. A true prairie gem, it plays an important role in the garden and in local ecosystems.

Why Grow Dense Blazing Star?

  • Pollinator magnet: Its nectar-rich flower spikes are beloved by bees, butterflies, bumblebees, skippers, and even hummingbirds, making it a standout plant for supporting pollinators through the season.
  • Winter wildlife value: Once the flowers fade, the plant forms seedheads. Seed-eating birds such as goldfinches feed on these seeds in fall and winter, helping wildlife find food above the snow.
  • Native biodiversity booster: As a native species, it supports a wide range of insects and helps recreate habitat structures similar to natural prairies and meadows.
  • Garden beauty: Its tall, architectural form adds vertical rhythm and late-season colour to borders, wildflower gardens, and native plantings.

Sowing & Growing:
This seed requires cold stratification to germinate. You can plant this seed in three different ways to cold stratify it:

  1. Sow directly in the soil in the fall.
  2. Sow in pots outdoors in winter. The pots can be kept on the ground and may become covered in snow. Ensure they have proper drainage.
  3. Keep seeds in the fridge for several weeks, then sow indoors in spring.

Dense Blazing Star prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Leave seedheads standing through winter for colour, structure, and bird food; cut back in spring as new growth begins.

At least 25 seeds per packet.
