Velvetleaf, AKA Cowboy Toilet Paper, is a striking annual plant in the mallow family with large, heart-shaped, velvety leaves that feel amazingly soft — so soft that people historically called it “cowboy toilet paper” because the foliage could be used as an improvised substitute.
Though often considered a weed, Velvetleaf has an interesting history of use around the world. It was once grown as a fiber crop, and various parts of the plant have been used traditionally for food, fibre, and medicine.
Edibility:
- Seeds: The seeds are edible. They can be eaten raw when under-ripe, or dried, rinsed, and ground into a powder for use in soups, breads, or other recipes. They contain protein, fat, and carbohydrates.
- Leaves: While leaves have been used in some cuisines, their flavor and texture are not especially notable as a food green.
- We grow it for its leaves so we can use them in our composting toilet in the forest.
At least 75 seeds per packet.
