Basket Willow (Salix spp.) Cuttings

Basket willow is one of the easiest and most generous plants you can grow. These fast-growing willows produce long, flexible rods that have been used for centuries for basketry, garden structures, fences, trellises, and living sculptures.

They are extremely vigorous and very easy to grow. Simply push the cuttings into moist soil and they will root quickly and begin growing. In their first season they can produce long new rods that can later be harvested for weaving or other garden uses.

Basket willow thrives in full sun and moist soil, but it is adaptable and will grow in most garden conditions. Many gardeners plant them along fences, in wet areas, or in dedicated coppice beds where the rods can be harvested every year. Cuttings should not be too long for best results. About 5 buds or nodes per cutting is an ideal length.

To encourage long straight weaving rods, the plants are typically coppiced: cut back close to the ground each winter. The plant then produces many new shoots the following spring.

Basket willow is a beautiful and useful plant that connects the garden to an ancient tradition of working with natural materials.

Cuttings:
Cuttings are approximately 0,5 cm - 2,5 cm (0.25" - 1") thick and will have at least 5 buds (nodes).

Planting instructions:
Push the cutting 15–20 cm (6–8 in) deep into moist soil, burying at least 2 buds and leaving at least 2 buds above the surface. Keep the soil moist while the plant establishes. Cuttings can be planted in spring or fall.
