Tomato - Chiapas (Solanum pimpinellifolium)

A fascinating heirloom tomato from Chiapas, Mexico, and a close wild relative of the cultivated tomato. Solanum pimpinellifolium produces cascades of small, intensely flavoured red fruits, with vigorous plants that can be exceptionally productive. Because it belongs to a different species from most cultivated tomatoes, it retains many characteristics of its wild ancestry, including natural resistance to common tomato diseases such as late blight, early blight and Septoria leaf spot. The tiny fruits have a concentrated, sweet-tart tomato flavour and are excellent for fresh eating, salads, snacking or letting children discover one of the wild ancestors of the tomatoes we grow today.

Growing: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, when the soil has warmed. Grow in full sun and provide sturdy support, as the vigorous plants can spread considerably. Indeterminate.
