Gourd - Birdhouse Gourd, Lagenaria siceraria

This plant is a vigorous climber, so give it a good trellis. It can grow along the ground, but the shape of the gourds will be more beautiful if they can hang while growing. Primarily pollinated by medium to large nighttime moths – if you plant in a greenhouse, you’ll need to give access to your greenhouse at night for these moths. To make the birdhouse, the gourd needs to dry. It may do so during the growing season, otherwise, it can be hung indoors, or in an unheated garage, to finish drying. The outside will go moldy during this process. This is natural. Wipe it off outdoors with a dry cloth from time to time during this process.
