Yes, you can grow a potato from a seed! All potato plants flower and produce fruit. These fruits are not edible. They look like small green cherry tomatoes while developing and turn a pale yellow when ripe.

You can harvest these fruits, collect the tiny seeds inside — about the size of ground cherry seeds — dry them, and grow them.

What makes these seeds truly special is that, unlike potatoes grown from tubers (which are essentially clones), each potato plant grown from seed is genetically unique, especially when produced through open pollination, as is the case here.

This means a wide range of possible shapes, colours, flavours, and levels of vigour. In the first year, plants often produce smaller tubers, which can be saved and replanted the following year for larger harvests.

Start the seeds indoors just like tomatoes or peppers, in small pots, and transplant outdoors once all danger of frost has passed. Grow your own unique potatoes — plant a seed!

At least 25 seeds per packet.
